When you’re looking for a new car near Bakersfield, you’ll encounter the abbreviations FWD, RWD, AWD, and 4WD. The difference between FWD and RWD is fairly self-explanatory, but what is the difference between AWD and 4WD? For starters, it might be helpful to break down these acronyms. AWD stands for all-wheel-drive and 4WD stands for four-wheel-drive. From there, we can take a look at how else AWD vs. 4WD compare so that when you’re shopping for your new SUV, you find just the right model.
As mentioned previously, AWD stands for all-wheel drive. In this drivetrain configuration, torque is directed from the engine to all four wheels. There is some variation in how this is done resulting in two different AWD systems: full-time AWD and part-time AWD. Full-time AWD systems send torque to both axles all of the time. Part-time AWD systems monitor the road conditions and your driving behavior as you drive in the Porterville area and switch from powering all four wheels to just the front wheels depending on the situation.
For starters, a reminder that 4WD stands for four-wheel-drive. But now that we know AWD powers all four wheels, what exactly is the difference between AWD and 4WD? Don’t these sound oddly similar? Well, AWD powers the front and rear axles, but 4WD is capable of sending specific amounts of power to individual wheels. In other words, with a 4WD system, the front right wheel might receive more torque than the front left wheel. This doesn’t happen with AWD.
4WD systems optimize performance in off-road and difficult conditions. They also consistently have some kind of monitoring system. They are commonly found in trucks, or vehicles specialized for off-road
So now we come to the big question; is AWD worth it? Is there really a “better” option? Neither AWD or 4WD is naturally better, they just have different strengths. If you mostly drive on roads in the Tulare area and just want better traction for inclement weather, then AWD would be a good investment. However, if you need a vehicle that can handle the most rugged off-road conditions, then you’ll want 4WD.
