How Much to Replace Brake Pads

Mechanic Inspecting Brake Pads and Rotors

Your brakes are possibly the most important safety component of your vehicle, so it’s essential that you keep them in proper condition. One of the easy ways you can keep your brakes working smoothly is to replace your brake pads if they’re wearing out. This is an easy fix that the service team at Delano Chevrolet can perform for you, but how much does it cost to replace brake pads? While it depends on your specific vehicle, the cost of replacing brake pads generally runs from $100 to $300 per axle, with most costs falling around the $ 150 per axle range. If the brake pads are made of organic materials, they tend to cost less, while higher-end composite brake pads tend to be pricier. If you contact Delano Chevrolet or come to our service center near Bakersfield, we can give you a more specific estimate.

Brakes vs. Brake Pads: What’s the Difference?

While “brakes” and “brake pads” are often used as interchangeable terms, they’re quite different. If there’s a problem with your brake pads, you don’t want to come in to get your entire brake system serviced–it’ll be unnecessary and a lot more expensive! Here’s how the two terms differ:

  • Brakes refer to the brake system as a whole, including the brake pads, rotors, discs, calipers, master cylinder, lines, and, if you drive an older vehicle, brake drums.
  • Brake pads are an important part of the brake system and apply pressure to the brake rotors or discs to bring the vehicle to a stop.

How Long Do Brake Pads Last?

If you use your vehicle as a daily driver around Porterville, your brake pads should last around 40,000 to 50,000 miles–that’s about three to four years of drive time. However, your driving habits can have an impact on the lifespan of your brakes. Hitting the brakes suddenly and frequently will wear out the brake pads prematurely, while coasting to a stop and gently applying the brakes will make them last longer.

Signs Your Car Needs Its Brake Pads Replaced

Luckily, if your brake pads are wearing out and need to be replaced, the signs will be very clear. If you notice any of the following on the Tulare roads, schedule a service appointment with Delano Chevrolet to replace your Chevy brake pads:

  • The brakes are making a squealing or squeaking sound
  • The indicator light turns on
  • Grinding metal sound
  • Brake pedal vibrates
  • The brake pads are less than 1/4 inch thick
