Car brake lights

Knowing how to change a brake light is an important skill to have. After all, the last thing anyone wants is to get into an accident on our Bakersfield roads. That’s why we’ve put together the step-by-step guide below on how to replace a brake light. But remember, our service department is always ready to assist if you want help to replace your Chevy brake light.

How to Replace a Brake Light

  1. Determine whether the signal or brake light is out. Your taillight housing will contain both the Chevy brake light and the signal light. Have someone step on the brake while you observe the brake light. This will tell you which bulb is the brake light.
  2. Get the right size bulb. Your owner’s manual should tell you which is the correct bulb for your brake light. But what if you don’t have your owner’s manual? Every auto parts store in Porterville has a book hanging in the lighting aisle that will tell you which bulbs are right for your vehicle. Besides that, any employee in the store can tell you how to change a brake light and can look up the right bulb for you.
  3. Find the spot where you can access the brake light. The brake light bulbs in some cars can be accessed directly from the trunk. If that’s the case in your car, skip the next step. In most newer vehicles, however, you will need to remove the taillight lens or housing.
  4. Remove the taillight lens or housing. The screws needed to remove the taillight lens are usually accessible from the trunk or hatchback. You may need to remove some cosmetic covering or pull back some carpeting to get to it.
  5. Remove the old bulb. In most cases, you can simply twist the bulb socket slightly counterclockwise to remove it.
  6. Install the new bulb. Apply a pea-sized drop of dielectric grease to the bulb, then insert it into the socket.
  7. Re-attach the tail light housing.
  8. Test your brake light.
